In this series of images, twenty individuals representative of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) community, will be speaking out about the discrimination they must face due to their deviance in social normality. Each individual captured in this series has shared their story and hurt with the photographer and asked to record, on paper, something they have heard or experienced concerning their sexuality. Each person is real. Each word written is felt.

  1. I noticed that your subjects are not engaging the camera very much and some not at all. Get them more comfortable so we can see their hurt and see them as people and not just as gay or whatever other label is put on them. -sky

  2. Ahh, I really feel something when I see these photos. They are getting better because I'm really feeling some emotion by reading these. I do kind of wish they were either in different settings or the same because three are behind brick walls and one is in the dark. Beautiful concept, though.

  3. These photos really play with your emotions. I really like the first ones you posted up, with the brick background. Maybe you should try keeping that same background throughout your book.

  5. You idea is really taking off and I find that it is a great way to let your ideas get heard. The only thing different that I would do is to slightly change up the photos so that the people are in different posses. Kind of like what you did with the person in the blue jeans sitting in the chair.

  6. I agree with nicholas saying. These ideas are really emotional. but one thing is there is no diffrenece among these pictures.

  7. I kind of like the aggression and confrontational look to the subjects. The fact that they are staring you dead on makes you either stare back or look away. You have to look at the subject (the individual) and what they have written, what they have to say, and I think that's what you're going for.

  9. You're photographs are filled with so much emotion and I believe having them look straight on helps with that. It makes them seem very strong. The brick background did make the pictures stronger but I like what you did with these. Keep up the good work!

  10. in my opinion, the newest upload is the strongest. the subject's face displays the most emotion. so regardless of the background, i think conveying strong emotion in the subject's face and body language is the most important thing. i "oppose" the idea of having the same background in every photo, especially the brick background (simply because i have seen it so much over time), because i think the variety works in your favor since each photo tells a different story.

  11. Might you focus on the things that people say about that GLBT community that isn't negative? Just an idea...

  12. The photos seem to be similar. A variety of settings, poses and attitudes would pique my interest, and really make me think about the message your subjects are conveying.

  13. I really like the 4th picture of the girl with the black background. It really makes her seem isolated and alone, which I'm sure is the feeling all of these individuals have felt. I would definitely try to find more isolated settings like that. Keep up the great work!

  14. These pictures really bring a sense of intimacy between the subject and veiwer. The one thing that I would recomend is thinking about whether or not you are going to keep your background consistently the same throughout the pictures since all but one of the pictures have bricks in the background. These pictures are so strong, can't wait to see more!

  15. the composition is really strong in all of your photos. it is good that most of your subjects are not passively showing their aggravation and anger for these actions. i like that the backgrounds tie together all of your subjects and if that is what you are attempting to do then i would suggest maybe making it less of a focus, like a strip of brick only in part of the photo.
