In this series of images, twenty individuals representative of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) community, will be speaking out about the discrimination they must face due to their deviance in social normality. Each individual captured in this series has shared their story and hurt with the photographer and asked to record, on paper, something they have heard or experienced concerning their sexuality. Each person is real. Each word written is felt.

  1. Your photos are very strong and I like that you captured the people straight on. Keep up the good work!

  2. I like how you are using your freedom of speech through digital photography. It helps get a message across and it also gives people the same idea as well. I knew someone once that did a video PSA on discrimination. I like yours because it uses digital photography.

  3. I really like the images. The simple background really helps you to focus on the individual and what they are saying. You get a sense of the person that is both confrontational and personal. :)

  4. First, the statement is a bit wordy in the sense that in the third to the last sentence you seem to be trying to say a lot. Also, as a member of this community, the wording of "will be granted a voice in speaking out about the discrimination they must face due to their deviance in social normality" causes me some offense. specifically "will be granted a voice" as if we (the GLBT community) are completely helpless, and also " about the discrimination *they must face* due to *their deviance in social normality*" (*= emphasis in a quote) this seems like you are not only saying our discrimination is a fact of life, but that we are choosing to be adverse to what is socially "normal" ( and normal is a word you might want to stay away from.)

    Images:
It seems like its a bit uneven, considering they are all women and possibly one member of the transgendered community. And I also feel like 20 individuals would not be enough for what you are trying getting across. I understand this is only the beginning of what could be a very strong, yet however its been done many times over, work.

I do not know if you are a member of this community or not, but this is just my perspective on your statement and the first two posts. So if its harsh, I am only trying to help.
    Thanks
    Ian

  6. Ian has a point in that read of the statement--perhaps revisit the wording.

The images are strong--but be careful not to oddly chop off things in the edge of the frame. (red plant in top image)

I am excited about these. Keep going and take lots of photos!

  7. The second photo form the top really speaks to me. The background seems to imply that he is already in a forlorn place. I agree with Ian that you must get your message across in a manner that is conducive with your intent. By talking to others perhaps you can come up with a statement that is not offensive. Great idea and I am ready to see your book in the fall!
